During the latter part of the 1980’s plans were drawn up for the erection of a building incorporating a large warehouse and office complex. Through negotiation with the Narrandera Shire Council, a loan was arranged (under a lease/buy arrangement) and in late 1988 the building was erected on its current location and officially opened by Mr Adrian Cruikshank (State Member for Murrumbidgee) on 15th October 1988 - a two hectare site on River Street located on the western outskirts of the Narrandera township in a position beside the Narrandera to Griffith railway line. The foresight that was used in the purchase of this particular block is evidenced by what it offers by way of possibilities for future expansion if and when required.

A.M.M.O. Ltd has continued to trade on this site until the current day with recent improvements being complete boundary fencing, resurfacing of the car and truck parking areas and office expansion. The complex also has a modestly equiped kitchen, toilets and shower facilities and 5,400 sq mtrs of floor space.

Our History...

Mr D.W.(Wal) Charles was invited to present an industry marketing paper to the Annual General Meeting of the Angora Breed Society (A.B.S)of Australia in Melbourne on the 12th November 1976 discussing ways that the industry could better improve the marketing of Australian Mohair.

At that time major wool brokering firms were generally controlling the marketing of mohair.

It was decided to form a body in Region 5 (Riverina) of the A.B.S. that would represent the producers in the marketing of their fibre. This body proceeded to gather a sizeable quantity of mohair for sale. The marketing system employed was based on the wool market’s bulk classing system. Initial assistance with the setting up of guidelines for mohair types was provided by David Williams who was, at that time, principal buyer for Ian Laycock Pty Ltd.

In 1978 Mr Maurie Moses (of Moses Wool Co. Narrandera) generously offered the use of portion of his wool store to gather, class and pool the fibre. This body traded under the name of the Australian Mohair Marketing Organisation.

The first sale was a success and the Organisation continued to gather, class and pool mohair for sale offering it for auction 4 - 5 times annually.

In 1980, when it was obvious that larger premises were needed, the move was made to a shed in Audley Lane (Narrandera) where the company operated for a short period of time. Following further expansion, another larger shed was leased in Dalgetty Street Narrandera in August 1981 (Formally Lingrens Depot).

A.M.M.O. Ltd was incorporated as a public company on 16th May 1983, being a not for profit company limited by Guarantee. The original Board members were :- Stewart Thomson, Daryl Finch, David Gillard, Ian Kelly, Wallace Charles, Stuart Macpherson. Brian Heylar, Maurice Winter and Eric Beck. Only one original board member currently remains a director today (D Gillard).

A further move was then made, through the assistance of the Narrandera Shire Council, To the former Telecom building in Charles Street Narrandera. This building was made available at a minimal rental and was used for approximately three years.

In recognition of A.M.M.O’s expansion, the Riverina Industry Development Board presented the organisation with an Enterprise Award for ‘Achievement Relating To Creation Of New Job Opportunities and its Contribution to The Development Of Narrandera’.
